Lifestyle & Ethics
WAY OF THE YOGI: ETHICS
The Yamas & Niyamas are the core, practical observations for leading a yogic life, as outlined by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. How can we use the Yamas & Niyamas to guide our relationships? How do we observe these tenets while in studentship? In leadership? We discuss what it means to navigate our own needs with those of our community and the world around us.
WAY OF THE YOGI: ACTIONS
The Yamas & Niyamas are not just tenets to be internalized but rather guidelines to be practiced for life mastery. The Niyamas ask us to deepen our commitment to ourselves. We discuss what it means to attend to the world within us so that we may gather our own life force energy and direct it toward fulfilling our greatest potential.
YOGIC ART OF LIVING
The lifestyle of a yogi consists of purifying & cleansing techniques and daily rituals for balancing the doshas and clearing body channels. These rituals are known as dinacharya and are prescribed through Ayurveda, the sister science of Yoga. Aside from cleansing rituals, we will also consider Ayurvedic approaches to yoga.
THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF TAPAS
Learn yogic techniques of building tapas, the heat built when your passion rubs up against action. It is what sparks the flame that gives off the energy to get things done. Tapas is the vital energy of accomplishment. Generating tapas is done by igniting intention with deliberate action. When tapas is burned in the act of carrying out our life’s work, we shine. We become manifesters: magnetic, lit-up, and remarkably brilliant.

We will also introduce the goddesses Kali, Durga, Lakshmi and Sita Devi, discuss their symbolism and their meanings as archetypes of the divine feminine and symbols of pleasure, duty, creativity, and illusion.
THE SCIENCE OF SACRED SOUND
Studying Sanskrit is a practice just like yoga. Mastery of proper pronunciation and learning of the meaning through sound requires consistent practice over time. We start with decoding the alphabet, a precise arrangement of distinct vibrational characteristics classified by point of articulation. Through call and response we will learn the method of how each sound is “played” by the vocal instrument as well as where the sound is “felt” or experienced in the body.
All courses are Yoga Alliance Approved for Continued Education (CE) Units.
